Today we wrote all about bats and tried to use descriptive language:
"I saw a hovering bat. I saw a bat swooping." H.V. "There's a bat hovering above, looking with his eagle eye at a squeaky rat." L. G. "I saw a freaky, fuzzy, flying blood-sucking bat with a slimy tongue." E.W. I saw a teeny-weeny munching crunching bat." D.K. We also began doing some research about bats. Each student posed a question and tried to locate it, put it into his or her own words and record a jot note. Whoosh! This is the amazing application of reading and writing and summarizing and communicating, learning to become researchers. Tomorrow we have library and just a reminder there is no school on Friday as it is a PD Day for teachers. Many students received their photos today.

Our owl sculptures are almost done! Kids were adding wings, ear tufts, eyes and feet today. We hope to display them for all to see how much we have been learning about owls. Check out Twitter to see some photos.
We also began our inquiry into bats today. Students recorded their bat questions and learned about the parts of non-fiction books such as the table of contents, the index and captions. This will help them as they search for answers to their questions about bats. In math, the students participated in math stations and in phys-ed we played bucket ball. This morning, the students were writing in their journals, participating in literacy centers and working with numbers in their math stations.
In the afternoon, we got to work with our artist in residence, Ewa. We added on to our owl sculptures and they are really beginning to take shape! Tomorrow... we delve into BATS! Today we discovered and read about what makes a bird a bird. If you guessed feathers, you would be correct! Ask your child what he/she learned.
This afternoon we began our owl sculptures with our artist in residence. If you have any newspaper at home to donate to this project, that would be great. Please send to school right away. Thanks! We have been focusing on basketball skills in P.E. and playing a game called bucket ball. A notice about doing a survey went home today re: the future of some CBE school for next year. Please take a moment to fill it in. Thank you. Just a reminder that Thursday Nov. 24 will be Pajama Day and Stuffy Day!!! Happy Monday!
Our highlight today was meeting Ewa, our artist in residence, who will be working with the whole school for the next 2 weeks. We learned all about different kinds of lines as we sketched in our visual journals and looked closely at objects in nature as we drew them. Please remember, if you haven't yet signed up for a Parent-Teacher conference, they are this week - Thursday, Nov. 24 and Friday, Nov. 25. Please go to the school website to book an appointment. Thanks! A reminder that because of conferences, there is no school on Friday. On Thursday, Nov. 24, it will be Pajama Day here at Andrew Sibbald. Everyone is invited to wear their p.j.s and bring 1 special stuffed animal to school.Let's get into school spirit! Today the grade 1 and 2 teachers participated in a planning session in the morning. Soon, our classes will be delving into the question, "how can I positively impact my community?" This rich question will tie together many aspects and areas of the curriculum. We are excited to bring forward this new learning with our students.
Tomorrow is Sibbald U. # 5 and we encourage students to wear their Sibbald t-shirts. Any over due library books should please be returned. Thanks! The students enjoyed going to their new literacy centers this morning.
The focus for our writing today was using descriptive or "juicy" words to write about owls. Lots of students had success with this skill. In the afternoon students completed their owls booklets and have brought them home today to share with you. Just a reminder that tomorrow is LIBRARY. With the colder weather here, please ensure your child is dressed properly for outdoor play. Today the students wrote about owls and what we have learned so far.
We began new literacy centers which focus on spelling, sight words, word games, rhyming, writing little books and using technology. In math, the student participated in math stations. This afternoon the students learned more about the burrowing owl.We love owls! It was good to be back to our school routines after the long weekend.
Ms. Manser told us some stories about looking after injured wild animals. Everyone was so interested and it brought up a lot of great discussion. The students were word-makers, journal writers, mathematicians and owl book creators today! Picture Retakes will be on Tuesday, Nov 15th. If you would like your child to have their picture retaken, if possible, please send back the original pictures and indicate you would like retakes or you can send in a note requesting that your child has retakes. If your child was away on the original picture day, we will have them on the list to have their picture taken. Please note, this is a change from our original advertised retake day of Nov 17th. We had a lovely Remembrance Day assembly this morning. It was uplifting to hear all the messages of peace accompanied by the students' singing and voices.
Back in the classroom, the students worked away on their TWAS writing and reading and math. Please note there is no school tomorrow. Have a great long weekend! |
