Thank you to parents who returned the report card envelopes. You may keep the report card inside and just send back the envelope.
If you have any questions about your child's report card, please contact me at school. The new round of Sibbald U. will be starting on Wednesday this week and the form was sent home on Friday to let you know which course your child got into. Today a couple of important notices went home. 1. Skating notice about volunteers - this field trip will be NEXT WEEK so I thought I should give you a heads up about volunteers. If you can make it one of the three days, please let me know ASAP. 2. Science experiment materials notice Today we examined the sounds "kn" and "ong" and wrote words containing these sounds. We added to our settings by painting more details. Students wrote in their fire writing journals. In math, the grade 2s played a tens and ones game and the grade 1s explored addition. We watched a movie about hot and cold temperatures.

Today was a busy day!
Some of the highlights: meeting our new student teacher, Miss Melbourne using the laptops to research penguins estimating the number of objects in math fire writing! drum fit balls in P.E. learning about the sounds "str" and "wh" Tomorrow **** school spirit day - dress up as your favorite character from a book, movie, tv **** snow shoeing in the afternoon 12:45-1:45 ****LIBRARY DAY It was a lovely afternoon for snow shoeing across our field. A big thanks to our two parent volunteers who helped the kids put on the snow shoes and came along with us.
Some comments from the kids" "This is hard work!" "We're walking on top of the snow." "I feel like a penguin!" "I didn't know how to snow shoe but I gave it a try." "I'm hot and sweaty!" We will go out snow shoeing one more time on Thursday afternoon 12:45-1:45 and all volunteers would be appreciated. Back in the classroom, we explored the sounds "oi", "oy" and "ck". The grade twos played some place value games on a website called abcya. You can check it out at home. The grade ones worked on addition number equations using ten frames. We wrote in our fire writing journals and listened to a story about how one author finds ideas for writing. Today was brought to us by the sounds "ch" and "ow" (as in the word now).
In math, the grade 1's used addition to find ways to make the number 10. The grade 2s learned how to break numbers apart by writing their tens and ones. We did some fire writing in the afternoon. In science the students participated in an experiment with "blubber" (we used shortening!) to keep their hands warm in icy cold water just like penguins do. In Phys-ed, we got to use the drum fit balls and sticks to exercise and dance. TOMORROW THE GREEN SIBBALD U. SHEETS ARE DUE WITH YOUR CHILD'S TOP 4 CHOICES. TOMORROW WE WILL BE SNOW SHOEING IN THE AFTERNOON. PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR CHILD DRESSES PROPERLY, INCLUDING HAT, MITTS AND SNOW PANTS! Today was brought to us by the sounds "aw" and "igh".
We wrote about our week in TWAS. In math, the students worked on addition (grade ones) and place value (grade twos). Next week on Tuesday and Thursday we will be going snowshoeing from 12:45-1:45. If anyone can help the kids put on the snowshoes, that would be greatly appreciated. Today a green form was sent home about our next round of Sibbald U.! Please go to the website and go through the courses with your child. This form is due back to school by TUES. JAN. 24. Thanks. Big excitement at our Fire Department Assembly today. One student from our class had his name drawn for a contest and our class also got to see the fire truck and we received some class money for educational supplies. Big Wowsers!
Today was brought to us by the combo letters "er", "ir". "ur" which all make the same sound in lots of different words. In math we did the estimating Jar and practiced writing addition equations. In science we found out some facts about 4 kinds of penguins and learned how to sketch a realistic-looking penguin. Ms. Manser read us more from the book Wonder. Still beautiful outside playing in the snow and loving the fresh air. A notice about upcoming field trips went home today. Today, the students explored the "oo" sounds like in the words moon and book. They brainstormed and recorded words to discover the two sounds made by these double vowels.
In journals, the kids had to write an "Ouch" story about a time they got hurt. The students used the W-H questions to plan out their ideas for writing. In math, they played Power of 10 card games. This afternoon, the kids used the laptops to fnavigate a website about penguins called kidzone penguins. TOMORROW IS OUR LIBRARY DAY! *******Next week we are planning to use the snow shoes for Phys-ed. We will require some volunteers to help us put on the snow shoes. If you can help, please email me at [email protected]. Thanks! Our new combo sounds today were "ar" and "le" at the end of a word.
The students learned about setting writing goals today such as striving to spell words accurately, working on neatness, adding details, adding capitals and periods and including descriptive words. They picked one goal to focus on in their journals today. We began a story telling unit to go along with our artist in residency, Jeff Stockton. The kids will be learning all about the elements of a story and how to become a better story teller through writing and speaking. In math, we did the estimating jar. We also began learning about place value and 10s and 1s. In science the students explored some websites about hot and cold temperatures. They colored in thermometers to indicate when water freezes and boils. We were outside to play in the beautiful winter weather! This morning our two new combo sounds were: "sh" and "ai". The kids brainstormed and recorded words with these sounds.
We wrote about this week at school. In math, we estimated the number of lego pieces. There were 76! We also finished the shape centers, having created and worked with the 2-D and 3-D shapes. This afternoon - back to our penguin investigation. The students sequenced and read a little book about penguins that they are bringing home today. They also made their own cut-out penguin as we learned about penguin body parts. Just a reminder there is NO SCHOOL TOMORROW. The teachers are working on report cards. Hope the weather warms up for some outside activities this weekend! |
